Samsung’s latest Galaxy S21 security update has arrived but, as usual, it contains more than security patches.
Samsung’s May 2021 security patch has already started rolling out to the Galaxy S21 range and it brings more than just security patches. According to Samsung’s rather sparse documentation, this latest update includes unspecified improvements to camera performance and Quick Share.
Currently, the update seems to be available only for the European Exynos versions of Galaxy S21 handsets listed below:
Galaxy S21 SM-G991B
Galaxy S21+ 5G SM-G996B
Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G SM-G998B
MORE FOR YOU
The firmware version to look for ends in “BXXU3AUDA” and comes in at a whopping 1.2GB, so a high-speed, unmetered Internet connection is recommended. The update should be pushed to your phone automatically, but if you’re impatient you can check manually by selecting Software Update from the settings menu.
Samsung provides no details on what camera improvements have been made, but recent independent performance results can help us make a good guess.
Dxomark’s camera benchmarks (tested prior to the update) reveal software-related camera issues, including inconsistent HDR processing and high levels of image noise. These are exactly the sort of problems firmware tweaks should be able to address, indeed Dxomark did notice a small improvement in noise performance after installing a previous update. However, it remains to be seen what real-world improvements Samsung has made this time around.
It’s good to see Samsung making continual camera improvements, but it wouldn’t hurt to see these issues ironed out before a phone is released rather than after all the camera reviews are out.
