More than 3,000 residences in San Jose lost their Comcast internet service Friday morning after a utility repair crew hit the fiber-optic cable during a job, a spokesman for the company said.

The outages started just before 10 a.m., according to customers in the area. Comcast spokeswoman Adriana Arvizo said the only customers affected were in San Jose.

Of the 3,300 customers affected, 2,000 are internet customers only, she said. The outage also affected 153 business customers, she said.

The outage lit up social media with angry comments from customers.

“A Comcast outage for all of downtown San Jose is a sure fire way to ruin a work day …” Twitter user “coastal_wanders wrote in an example of many such outbursts.

Comcast did not reveal the utility company that was doing the repair work but said the repair project was being conducted on S. 10th Street in San Jose.

Arvizo said the company had repair crews on hand, but there was no estimate for when cable and internet services might be restored.

“These types of repairs take time,” she said.

Check back for updates.
