You'll need to bring your old PS4 VR gear with you to the PS5.
Credit: SonyIt’s looking like quite a few PS4 games will be backward compatible on PS5—something that we didn’t really get in the PS3 to PS4 leap.
Sony is smart to emulate Microsoft in this regard. The Xbox One’s backward compatibility list is impressive, and has been expanding for years.
The PlayStation VR headset will also work with the PS5, as will many PSVR games, but there’s a catch.
It turns out that the PS5’s camera wasn’t built to work with the PSVR headset.
In Sony’s new FAQ regarding backward compatibility, the company explains:
“Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Please note that playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller(s), and PS Camera (for PS4), which are sold separately from the PS5 console. Also, the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5. You’ll need to use the PS Camera (for PS4), and the PS Camera adaptor (no purchase required), to use PS VR on PS5.”
In other words, you’ll need the PS4 camera and a PS4 DualShock controller to utilize the PSVR headset on your PS5. If you don’t have a PS4 but you do end up buying a PS5, this makes purchasing a PSVR headset quite a lot more expensive since you’ll need the DualShock and the camera.
It’s odd, to say the least, but at least the adapter is free. Hopefully they won’t be hard to come by.
The PS5 launches on November 12th and is currently quite hard to find unless you want to pay price gouging scalpers exorbitant sums of money. You shouldn’t do that. Just be patient. There will be plenty more supply as we get into 2021, and there aren’t a ton of must-have PS5 exclusives at launch anyways.
