TV, Video Devices Grow To 1.1 Billion, Samsung Has Top 14% Share 09/08/2020 - MediaPost Communications

TV and video streaming devices have grown to 1.15 billion devices worldwide -- with Samsung the leading brand in terms of global share, according to Strategy Analytics.

This is up from 1.04 billion in the second quarter of 2018.

As of the first quarter of this year, Samsung has 14% of TV and video streaming devices across 27 major countries.

Samsung is followed by Sony (12% share), LG (8%), Hisense (5%), TCL (5%) and Amazon (5%).

Looking at specific video platforms, Tizen --a Linux-based mobile operating system developed and used primarily by Samsung Electronics -- is the leading platform player in TV streaming, accounting for 11% of devices. Apple’s WebOS is next at 7%; Sony PlayStation, 7%); Roku OS (5%); Amazon Fire OS (5%); Android TV (4%); and Microsoft’s Xbox (4%).

In the U.S., connected TV devices grew 0.2% (15.8 million units) in the first quarter to a total of 337 million. 

Roku's TV OS, Amazon's Fire TV and Samsung's Tizen operating system were the leading connected TV platforms in the U.S. representing a dominating nearly 60% combined share. In industry estimates, Roku has a 30% share, with Amazon Fire TV at 12% and Samsung Tizen at 11%.

Strategy Analytics’ data is based on device sales/usage tracking in 27 global markets.

Strategy Analytics predicts paid SVOD subscriptions will grow to 1.43 billion in 2025 from 621 million in 2019.
