Pittsburgh Public Schools provided an update on its device distribution for remote learning on Friday. On Aug. 29, the district was forced to close all of their technology distribution sites early when they ran out of devices.As a result, online learning, which was scheduled to start Aug. 31, was postponed until Sept. 8.On Friday, the district said they now have more than 2,800 devices on hand to distribute to families in need this weekend. The district said those families have been contacted with instructions for laptop pickup.The district said next week it will have another 600 new devices available to give families who do not have access to an electronic device to complete their first phase of distribution. Read the statement from Pittsburgh Public Schools below:"In preparation for device distribution this weekend, we have reached out to families in need of laptops ensuring they have the necessary technology for the first day of school. We also have a strong partnership with the Housing Authority of Pittsburgh and Neighborhood Allies to provide families in need with 12 months of free internet access through Comcast’s Internet Essentials. "There have been reports of laptops being destroyed in a recent shipment. Yesterday, we received a shipment of laptops and only 19 were destroyed in transport. Today, we received a second shipment of laptops, all in working order. In total, we have more than 2,800 devices on hand to distribute to families in need this weekend. Those families have been contacted by the District with instructions for laptop pickup. "Next week, we will have another 600 new devices available to give families who do not have access to an electronic device to complete our first phase of distribution. Please see the attached PowerPoint for more information about the district’s efforts to provide technology to families."As we work to become a 1:1 District, we will continue to provide open communication with families regarding laptop availability with the hopes that all students will have a device by the end of the first quarter."
