Pickens County School District internet outage caused by cyberattack, district says - WYFF4 Greenville

An Upstate school district dealt with an internet outage Tuesday morning. The Pickens County School District said the outages on school and student devices were caused by a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attack on servers tasked with running Pickens County School District Online Services."I want to be clear it wasn’t a DDOS attack on our school district," said John Eby with Pickens County School District Communications. "We're not even sure if there was a DDOS attack on schools in general, but somewhere down the line there was a DDOS attack that affected our web filtering software company which affected all of our devices as well.The district posted the following on Facebook Tuesday morning. "The School District of Pickens County is experiencing an internet outage on school and student devices. The outage was caused by a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on our web filtering service. Please stand by for updates."According to the district, this cyberattack prevented all Pickens County School District students from participating in their scheduled E-Learning for a 2 hour period between 10 a.m. and noon. Teachers, staff and students alike were all unable to access any Pickens County School District operated portals.The outage was fixed by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. It is still unclear as to who was responsible for the cyberattack and the intended target of the cyberattack is unknown at this time. "We don’t know where it came from, we don’t know how high up it goes or what level was attacked," said Eby. "We know it wasn't us and we know what it affected on our end, so we’re looking forward to find out what it was. I'm sure everybody who is affected by this will be.
