The Innovare Advancement Center in Rome celebrated its grand opening this week, albeit virtually.

Originally dubbed the Open Innovation Campus, the $12 million computer technology research center at Griffiss International Airport was first unveiled in August 2019. It was designed to give scientists and companies a place to use quantum information processing to analyze and improve computer technology, among other research areas.

The Innovare Advancement Center was developed through a collaboration between Oneida County, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate, the Griffiss Institute and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

The campus is a three-floor, 40,000-square-foot facility within Building 100 at Griffiss International Airport in Rome. Its features include two quantum labs, two neuromorphic/electronic labs, event space and classrooms.

"Innovare enables a robust high-tech entrepreneurial, R&D, and educational ecosystem for the region and the nation by driving advancements in key strategic areas, including artificial intelligence/machine learning, cybersecurity, unmanned aerial systems, and quantum, with Innovare-connected research taking place at partnering organizations all over the world," said Michael Hayduk, deputy directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate, in a statement.

On Tuesday, the center kicked off the three-day Million Dollar International Quantum U Tech Accelerator, an event that saw teams pitch their ideas on quantum technology advancement for a chance to win research funding. Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson served as the keynote speaker, while the event also featured virtual tours of the facility.

Calling the accelerator a springboard to showcase Innovare’s capabilities, Rome Mayor Jacqueline Izzo said the center will be a destination workplace for research and development.

"Four years ago, discussions began with Rome Lab around the creation of an open innovation campus which would bring together academia, scientists, software engineers and entrepreneurs," Izzo said in a statement. "This week, our vision became a reality with the launch of Innovare Advancement Center at Griffiss Business and Technology Park, and its first virtual event the $1M International Quantum U Tech Accelerator competition attracting a world-renowned keynote speaker and dozens of attendees from around the globe."
