Gig speed Internet at home not enough this pandemic year? How does 2 Gig sound?
Google Fiber is preparing an upgrade for its Internet customers in Huntsville and Nashville. Those two and 17 other Google Fiber cities have 1 Gig speed now, and the company is looking for testers there to help roll out its new 2 Gig option.
“This year has made this need for more speed and bandwidth especially acute, as many of us are now living our entire lives — from work to school to play — within our homes, creating unprecedented demand for internet capacity,” the company said.
2 Gig will cost $100 a month and provide 2 Gig speed for downloads and 1 Gig speed for uploads. It comes with a new Wi-Fi router and “mesh extender, so everyone gets a great online experience no matter where they are in the house,” Google Fiber said.
First to get the service will be the Trusted Tester households, but Google Fiber plans to roll out 2 Gig to all Nashville and Huntsville customers later this year. It will launch across most other Google Fiber and Google Fiber Webpass cities in early 2021.
